about us

TUCOSWA was established as a federation of trade unions in ESwatini at its inaugural congress on the 11 – 14th March 2012. The federation was a merger of the ESwatini Federation of Trade Unions (SFTU) and the ESwatini Federation of Labour (SFL) to form TUCOSWA and was joined by the ESwatini National Association of Teachers (SNAT). The merger process began in 2008 where the union federations agreed to a memorandum of understanding and formed the Labour Coordinating Council (LCC). This merger process was assisted by international partners, which included Unite (UK), COSATU, ITUC, the ILO and LO-Norway and LO Denmark. TUCOSWA is the most representative workers’ organisation in ESwatini representing workers in almost all the key economic sectors of the country. The organisation since its establishment in March 2012 has been striving to be relevant in promoting and defending fundamental principles and rights of workers within a context of high levels of poverty, high incidence of HIV/AIDs, low economic growth, high unemployment and poor social dialogue engagement within a political context that does not give effect to human and trade union rights instruments the country is signatory to. This has resulted in the Committee of Experts on the Application of Standards and Recommendations (CEARC) making numerous recommendations accompanied by several ILO high level missions to the country.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

01.

To establish TUCOSWA as the voice and movement of workers and other marginalised groups such as workers who are unemployed, on short term contract, in the informal sector as well women and youth.) This it must do through campaigns that actively educates and organises its membership and the larger working class.

02.

To build a strong national, regional and local TUCOSWA with a shared leadership and which unites workers in strong sector unions. Key here is that it draws on existing resources through collaborative activities with affiliates and civil society organisations and its global partners.

03.

To strengthen its organisations though developing alliances links inside the country as well solidarity networks in the region and globally.
